=== Known Problems ===
A) If you experience bumpy video or audio performance
on a movie or slide show, stop the movie, drag the control
bar slider back to the left as far as it can go. Click on the
play arrow.
B) When a Macintosh system has more than a few
dozen fonts installed, the product may crash. To prevent
this problem:
1) Leave Monaco, Chicago, Geneva and New York in
your System Folder and move the other fonts
out of the System Folder.
2) Re-start your computer.
3) Launch the DOGGUIDE.
C) There are potential incompatibilities with QuickTime
for Windows and QVision 2000 or Dell 864 video drivers,
and there are potential sound problems
with QuickTime movies played on some Compaq
machines. If you are using any of these
configurations, you may have trouble playing movies
in Complete Guide to Dogs. To determine whether
the problem lies with your system configuration or
with Complete Guide to Dogs, try playing a
QuickTime movie with the Movie Player application
provided with QuickTime for Windows. If the movie
does not play correctly in the Movie Player, the
problem is outside the scope of Complete Guide to
Dogs.
=== Troubleshooting-Windows ===
(A) If you see a strange color palette or get an error message
pertaining to QTIM.DLL when the program opens, RE-START
WINDOWS. Then launch the program as described in the
Installation instructions.
(B) If you are running Windows 3.1 and still get the QTIM.DLL
error message after trying (A) above, try the following:
STEP 1: Double-click on your Control Panel.
STEP 2: Double-click on the QuickTime icon.
STEP 3. Click More.
STEP 4. Select the Video tab.
STEP 5. In the Draw Method box, select Video Driver.
STEP 6. Click Apply.
STEP 7. Click Yes.
STEP 8. **BE SURE TO RE-START WINDOWS**
STEP 9. In your Program Manager, open the DogGuide
program group.
STEP 10. Double-click on DogGuide.
(B) Another possible, though unlikely problem is that
your CD-ROM was physically damaged in the man-
ufacturing process. It's possible for the CD-ROM
to look perfectly OK, but not work in your computer.
In general, if this is the problem, your CD-ROM drive
will make unusual noises as it tries to read
the disk. The Complete Guide to Dogs CD-ROM may
not even show up on your desktop. If you suspect
this is your problem, contact our customer service
line at 1-800-716-8506.
We want you to have a successful experience
with the Complete Guide to Dogs. If these suggestions
don't resolve your problem, please let us know!
=== Troubleshooting-Macintosh ===
(A) The most common problem on the Macintosh is a
conflict with an "extension," also known as an "init."
To see if this is your problem, try the following
two steps:
STEP 1. Copy both DOGGUIDE and the entire OMO folder
to your hard disk. Remove the CD-ROM, and restart
your Macintosh, holding down the SHIFT key until
the Mac has completely restarted. (This turns off all
extensions.) Now, try double-clicking on DOGGUIDE.
It should start up and give you a message that
QuickTime is required. When you click the OK button
in the dialog, it should quit. If this do not happen, your
problem is probably not an extension conflict:
skip down to (B), below.
STEP 2. Throw away the OMO folder. Run the Extension
Manager. (You'll find it in the Apple Menu under
Control Panels.) Turn off ALL extensions and
control panels except: Your CD-ROM driver
(which is probably called Apple CD-ROM), QuickTime,
and Sound Manager.
Restart your Macintosh normally. Insert the Complete
Guide to Dogs CD-ROM and try to run DOGGUIDE.
It should run successfully. If it does, you can go back
to the Extension Manager and turn on extensions one
by one. You'll need to restart your Macintosh and try
DOGGUIDE each time, until you find the one that causes
DOGGUIDE to fail. Or you can set up a special
minimum set of extensions just for running multi-
media CD-ROMS as many experienced Macintosh users do.
(B) The next most common problem is a SCSI problem.
To check for this:
STEP 1. Turn off your Macintosh. DISCONNECT all external
SCSI devices (It's NOT ENOUGH to turn them off).
If your CD-ROM is external, make sure it's the
only device connected, and it has a proper SCSI
terminator.
STEP 2. Restart your Macintosh, insert the CD-ROM,
and double-click on DOGGUIDE icon in the DOGS folder
on your hard drive to launch Complete Guide to Dogs.
(C) Another possible, though unlikely, problem is that
your CD-ROM was physically damaged in the man-
ufacturing process. It's possible for the CD-ROM
to look perfectly OK, but not work in your computer.
In general, if this is the problem, your CD-ROM drive
will make unusual noises as it tries to read
the disk. The Complete Guide to Dogs CD-ROM may
not even show up on your desktop. If you suspect
this is your problem, contact our customer service
line at 1-800-716-8506.
